Today’s bento is brought to you by the letters ‘B’ and ‘P’. I was making it this morning and went to the fridge to grab the tomatoes. Buddy saw me and immediately got frantic, “BUDDY DO! BUDDY DO!!!!!” He started wailing when I picked them out and washed them because he had wanted to choose them. Since he doesn’t know a firm tomato from a football, I was unable to accomodate his wishes.

Instead, I let him put the tomatoes into the bento, which worked like a charm in getting him to stop screaming. I swear, the kid can turn the tantrum on and off like a light switch. So anyway, this one was done by Buddy and Pikko. I’m one proud bento mama today!

This is tonkatsu from a few days ago. I had no bento yesterday because I had a lunch meeting at The Willows. The place was a ghost town, it was scary. Don’t people eat lunch out anymore?? I especially liked the roast turkey and prime rib. I wish I’d skipped the fish and chicken long rice and gotten more turkey.

Anyway, tonkatsu with furikake rice and green beans and Buddy’s tomatoes. The wedding is this Sunday and I have no idea how much I weigh, but I tried on the SIZE SIX dress last night and I fit just fine (awesome), so that is really all I care about at this point. I’ve got my shoes, my bra, and my dress. I just need to find some nice wedding appropriate earrings, a matching sweater to keep warm, and pantyhose and then I’m all set.

Mr. Pikko and I will be watching UFC 84 in Kona this Saturday. GO GO BJ!

I type this with blurry eyes. Buddy woke up at 4:15 AM, asking for “chicken and rice” since he didn’t eat much dinner the night before. I went to the kitchen and like any other good, kind, caring bento-minded mother woken up at 4 AM would have, gave him a wonderfully nutritious and beautifully prepared breakfast: chopped up microwaved hotdogs. LOL

Did I have you going? I suggested everything from Cheerios to strawberries to pancakes to grapes to peanut butter whole wheat toast. He wouldn’t have any of it while he waited for the rice to cook so that I could make him some Costco chicken fried rice, so that’s what he ate. And then when the rice was ready to fry, he was “full” and wanted to watch tv. Typical toddler, living in the now, which changes every 5 minutes.

Today I’m having tonkatsu. I had meant to cook some chicken I didn’t get a chance to use over the weekend and try chicken katsu in a different way, but fell asleep putting the kids to bed. This looked a lot better before the sauce all oozed together, but unfortunately I took too long to take the picture. The katsu is cut into small pieces, there’s rice underneath, and the asparagus lays nicely on top.

In my second tier I have a salad. I topped it with some Costco chicken so that I didn’t need dressing, but I might go trolling into the work fridge and see if there’s some healthy dressing I could sprinkle on.

Someone commented yesterday with a really great link to a blog post by Biggie on how to do thin omelets in the microwave. It made me think back to when I had lots of time to read everyone’s blog and see all the great lunches and I really miss doing that. Biggie has such a wonderful, helpful blog and if I ever get around to constant reading again, hers is definitely on the top of the list. When I first got into bentos a year ago, hers was always a favorite of mine. Please take a look at her site if you haven’t seen it yet. ^_^

Last night as predicted, I didn’t feel like making a pumpkin pie. The good news though, is that I now have ground ginger! My mother in law lent me her bottle. I’m told I have two days to use the pumpkin before it goes bad, so we’ll see what happens tonight.

We had tonkatsu for dinner and I took home two pieces for Mr. Pikko, who was home sick again. He didn’t eat all of the second piece so I sliced it up and took his leftover rice as well.

In the little green container (which was a gift from one of my bento customers!!) is some tonkatsu sauce. I included the three tomatoes for color. I should have added some carrots too or used the orange sauce container instead, but I was in a hurry. I peeled some sections off the cucumber before I sliced it to give it that look.

In my second layer I have some sliced persimmon on the left. On the right side is a mixture of pomegranate seeds and blueberries. A very healthy fruit layer!! 😀

Tomorrow I start off hosting a gaming radio show on the net at Online Gaming Radio. Yet another reason why I’ve been going cuckoo lately. The show is about Final Fantasy XI and is called “The Mog House”. It will air live every Wednesday from 6 to 9 PM PST. My co-hosts are two of my fellow administrators at Allakhazam, ImperialNinja and Exodus. If you’re into FFXI and are bored around this time, please tune in! Shows are available later as podcasts. To listen in just go to the Online Gaming Radio website and click on “Listen Live” at the specified time.

The preschool drop-off today went ok with no tears while we were there! Whew! We’ll see how things are tomorrow when she has to go back, heh.

As I mentioned yesterday, with 10k I wanted to reward myself so I went to Marukai. Mr. Pikko had taken the day off and I had a splitting headache by afternoon so I left about an hour early. Of course, headaches at work suck but headaches while shopping for bento things suck a bit less, so I went anyway. The only bad part about it was that while I was in the dollar store they had this horrifying music playing on their telephone speakers throughout the store. It did not help my pounding head.

Still, I found some great accessories! There were no new boxes and as usual the place looked like a ransacked trinket store, but I got a lot of cute paper food cups, some cute seafood food dividers, some animal food cups with covers, and some other animal food cups (which I have used today). I bought two of the plastic animal food cups thinking I could sell one but then later I discovered that the two packages, though identical in shapes and animals, had different colors for different shapes (meaning the triangle one was blue in one and green in another) so of course I had to keep both. Haha! I picked up a couple other things to sell as well. I hope to have a PayPal cart of extra items up soon, keep an eye out for that if you’re looking to get started!

When I was up in LA my cousin and I were joking around about how we’d buy Marukai subscriptions and then by the next time we go back, it’s been well over a year and the subscription is expired so basically we pay $10 a year to shop there once. Well, I am determined to change that! After the dollar store I stopped by the Marketplace next door and picked up a few things. One of the things I was excited to get was what I’ve seen called “kewpie mayo” on several other blogs. It was a bit hard to find and was labeled “QP Mayo” instead, but I finally have one in stock at home! I also bought two packets of noodles to make “Ebi Curry Spaghetti”. Once I buy me some shrimp I will have to try that. The calorie/fat info on the back was surprisingly low! It was a bit odd. I couldn’t find the front door for some reason. There was only one door that said EXIT EXIT EXIT DO NOT ENTER all over it. Finally it ended up being all the way down where it looked like a different store. And then when I checked out, they didn’t bag my stuff, just put it back into a basket and shoved the bags in there! I didn’t mind, it was just odd since I didn’t know that’s how they do it!

Today for lunch I have leftover tonkatsu along with furikake rice, veggies in the food cup I mentioned above, sliced fishcake, and romaine lettuce with cukes, tomatoes, and rotisserie chicken. I count this as 3 points: 1 for rice (since it’s mixed w/ brown), 1 for the flour on the tonkatsu (fried in olive oil, pork and egg are Core), and 1 for the fishcake. I’m just guessing on the flour though. I figure it’s better to overestimate. Inside the little thermos bottle is some Catalina Free salad dressing, also Core.

Lunch is packed in a new bento box that I found at Price Busters. They had the same box in three colors so of course I had to get them all… They each have different pictures and at $1.99 I can’t resist. And bonus, they all have food dividers! I love boxes that come with those! 😀 I’ve found that most of these really cheap boxes are old ones as the copyright date is around 2003 or so. But I don’t care if they’re from the 90s. If it’s cheap, I’m there!

Today is August 1st, which marks 1 month until what will be the greatest season in UH Football history. Can. Not. Wait.

Tonkatsu

We had yummy tonkatsu last night and I took a few pieces for lunch today. Having fallen down a couple of stairs and twisting my ankle yesterday, it clearly rattled my brains because I forgot to bring sauce!! 😦 Lucky thing I have some Aloha Shoyu packets here to save the day! Since I had a hard time walking around the kitchen this morning, my bento had to be done rather quickly and I didn’t have time to re-do it after being unhappy with the result.

There’s a bit of corn underneath the katsu, but I couldn’t fit the katsu without hiding it!

I got approval yesterday to cover the Anime Expo in Long Beach, so I will have to start planning on where I can go bento shopping. If anyone lives in LA and knows where to go, please let me know!!! Don’t know where I’ll be staying yet, but hopefully it’s close to some bento-ish stores! I’ll also have to plan my breakfast bento because last time I went to LA I got pwned by the airport food prices. $8.00 ham sandwich FTL!
