Teriyaki Beef (124)

Once in a great while I do a bento that take me less than 10 minutes to put together and thankfully, this was one of them. Lately I feel like I have 3x the amount of things to do to squeeze into 24 hours and on top of that, I seem to be getting sleepy earlier and earlier. I did manage to get some work done on my costume last night though. I’d burnt out and had to force myself to get back into it.

We ate teriyaki beef last night for dinner and since my mother in law’s recipe is a very strongly flavored one, instead of eating it with rice I ate it with all salad. As you can guess from my KCCA salads (which means Kim Chee Crab & Avocado Salad) I like to use meats with heavy or spicy flavoring so that it eliminates the need for salad dressings. While doing Weight Watchers I of course got into the habits of reading the food label of everything I could and found that salad dressings actually have quite a bit of fat in them. Granted, I don’t use the whole serving listed at 2 Tb, but still… 2 Tb of salad dressing with 17% of your daily fat? Nuh uh. With heavily flavored toppings, you really don’t need any dressing.

I took salad greens for today’s bento but since I had some rice leftover from yesterday I put that in with an ume. I added some of my fresh tomatoes to the salad. Notice how some are even tinier than the tiny ones? lol I guess some of them are just in a super hurry to ripen already. It’s pretty cool, I get to pick maybe 5-8 tomatoes every morning. Pretty soon I’ll have to start taking them to my mother in law’s house because I don’t think I can keep up eating that many!

I had put this bento into the same Bonnie Bear box from yesterday but then decided that with the broccoli, I’d do one more green entry for bentochallenge and so moved it into the same kind of box, only green. The box is rather amusing, the saying on the front is, “Classy Croaky… is funniest and dedicated, his the best player on the team.” lol!

I added a drop of green food coloring to a bit of water and then mixed the rice in. Doesn’t it look so freaky?!? I added a packet of green furikake but it turns out it’s not that green. Not a very exciting bento, but you can’t deny it’s very green!! Extreme close-up!

I put soy sauce in the little bottle but I’m unsure whether I’ll use it. If anything I’ll add it to the broccoli for a bit of taste. I’m so bad about shoyu like that. And here my cousin was just telling me how it’s so great that I eat healthy, then I add shoyu to a bento just for the container. D: I may end up going to Marukai tonight as I have to leave early to go get screwed over by my car registration fees at Satellite City Hall today. Hopefully they’re not so bare anymore!!

During my first trip to Marukai I bought this $1.49 bento box in a horrid orange color with 3 weird monkeys on the cover and the words, “Do you like living here? Yes I like it a lot”. I have no idea what possessed me to buy it or why I bought 3 thinking I could sell them on eBay. Maybe the $1.49 price tag just fried my brain and from then on I was doomed. Anyway, that’s the box I used today. The really creepy cover aside, it’s a great size bento box!

We ate some very yummy teriyaki beef last night so I had to take some for lunch. I used one of my many onigiri molds to make a flower shaped musubi with an ume in the middle. Unfortunately the beef had touched the rice on the way home so some of it was brown. My poor flower has wilt! The ume also stained some of the flower because I wasn’t careful as I pressed it in. These little umes are a little different from the bigger, wrinkly looking ones but they’re definitely cuter. They seem crazy expensive too, like $5.00 for a small container of maybe 40 plums. I try to look at it as 40 bentos worth of ume and that makes it seem not too bad. As you can see, I put in broccoli and daikon kim chee for veggies. I also packed my crab avocado salad and two white peaches, but you already know what that must look like, lol!

I went back on what I said earlier this week and have not been using the online Weight Watchers points planner like I said I would. I wanted to continue my self-regulating Core diet to see how my weight would do without a complete Snarf-fest to start off the week. So far I seem to be doing pretty good, I broke 133 lbs this morning and weighed in at 132.7! ^_^

MIL’s dinner tonight was teriyaki beef and I know what you’re thinking by now. Yes, it’s true, I am so completely blessed in life that we eat at my mother-in-law’s house every week night. And add to the fact that I don’t have to cook all week, she’s an insanely great cook. She gave us banana bread yesterday too, which tastes like five kinds of win.

No, you can’t have her.

Anyway, I have more pics to share than usual. This afternoon I had to run some errands and they took a lot less time than I’d thought, so I went to Marukai 99 Superstore at Ward. I’m standing in front of the wall of miraculously cheap bento accessories trying not to overflow my basket and there’s this lady with a baby standing to my left just in my peripheral vision. When I’m finally done being a soy sauce bottle hog, I turn and holy-freaky-wierd-coincidence! it’s my ONLY other friend-with-a-baby Hyechin and her little sumo who is already way bigger than my own son, yet less than half his age. He smiled at me, awww!! It must be the small town Hilo genes that brought us together. How the heck else does something like that happen?

I continued on my purchasing rampage through the store and when I was done, I still had a buttload of time to kill so I stopped by Shirokiya again. I found some cute chopsticks, 3 tier lacquer bento boxes 40% off, and this strange Japanese grill that was only $5.00! And drool!!! I saw the Zojirushi Ms. Bento for sale at $34.99, 8 bucks less than Amazon! Mentioned to hubby that this would make a very nice Mommy’s Day present. His response included an inquiry as to why I didn’t just buy it and save him the trouble of going down there and getting it. Men.

I went to the Sanrio store but damn the Ala Moana one suxass! With even more time to kill I went to Kahala Mall and bought two bento boxes at Sanrio Surprises along with some seriously expensive Hello Kitty picks. Most of the stuff I bought is for me to sell on eBay or to further entrench Nexa into the bento obsession. Teehee. Here’s my stash of things for myself:

Okay, so back to the teri beef. I wanted to avoid rice today so I went with a lot of veggies. Using one of my new bento boxes from Marukai, I lined the bottom with a lettuce leaf and put the sliced teri beef, remainder of the cucumber kimchee, chopped up vegetable fishcake, and some of the tsukemono I made the other night. I added in a tiny soy sauce bottle for the tsukemono. I have a whole bottle at work, but I wanted to use one of my new toys. 😀 It looked too green, so I added a few grape tomatoes and dropped some minced carrot into the middle.

Fruit bowl is boring, but here’s a pic anyway:

The boxes look pretty when closed up! Since these boxes don’t come with straps, I stacked them and tied em up in a kitchen dish cloth. The fishcake is low in calories and I’m kinda sorta cheating by putting down “lean beef” and “teriyaki sauce” separately in the Weight Watchers planner so that it counts as Core. But really, it doesn’t make any sense to say “teriyaki beef” is 7 frickin’ points per slice while I can eat 1/4 cup teriyaki sauce and lean beef round as 0 points. So there!
