Alrighty, it is now 1:52 AM on Friday and I am obviously tired out of my mind and starving to boot. However, I brushed my teeth to ensure that I wouldn’t eat something just before going to bed. No guarantees on correct spelling and grammar in this post though.

As I mentioned yesterday, the kiddie terrors put a damper on my Thursday plans, so I had to continue my bento tonight. This one took me a lot longer than the first, mostly because the food preparation took so much time. I took three hours yesterday to cook food and today I took another three hours to complete the embellishments, bringing this gigantic mass of Sanrio lunch to six hours preparation time. Here it is!! (click it for bigger photo)

Before I start describing just how messed up in the head I am, let me just say that I’m not all that pleased with the results I got from this landmark lunchie. I had envisioned something much more vibrant in color and my favorite character, Pochacco, ended up looking the worst of the little guys. I think it still looks cute and all, but it’s nowhere near the one I’d put together in my head.

There is food underneath the characters and so at the top I have oyako donburi sprinkled with chopped wheatgrass, since I had no green onions. I thought this was amusing since we watched the finale of Celebrity Apprentice last night and so much attention was given to wheatgrass, which I just so happen to be growing all over my house and at work. Too funny!! On the right side there is some vegetable yakisoba, on the bottom I have little squares of Okinawan sweet potato. People ask me about the potato all the time and to answer the inevitable question again: No, I do not dye the potato. It is naturally colored that way. On the left I have shelled edamame.

First up, to get rid of my shame early, is what is supposed to be Pochacco. I think I just picked a bad picture of him to copy and it was too small as well. He’s made out of nori, pear skin (shirt), egg, and toasted sesame seeds. All the little characters sit on a d’anjou pear star. I thought afterwards that I should have dyed it yellow to add more color, but by then I had already stuck Bad Badtz and Keroppi on, so it was basically too late. *sob* Also, I had wanted to use my star shaped Whale of a Punch, but it’s gone AWOL. I suspect either Baby Girl or Buddy have hidden it in a secret place and have forgotten where already. So anyway, that star is freehand!

I had previously used white cheese or d’anjou pear to make white things but finally figured out something even better! Boiled egg whites! With all the boiled eggs still sitting in the fridge, I realized that it would make the perfect white carving material. It worked out great for all the characters. I am so unhappy with Pochacco that I wasn’t going to take a close-up picture of him. But then I realized that he’s sitting on top of my donburi and I didn’t want him to get offended and pee all over my food. He is a dog after all…

Monkichi is a rather old Sanrio character from when I was in high school. I’m not sure a lot of kids nowadays would recognize him. I made him out of hotdog skin. You can kinda see how he is slightly curled, which actually turned out good because it made him look more 3D. The lighter parts of him are hotdog as well, only the inside part is showing outwards. I forgot to make him his two cheeks, but after six hours I no longer give a crap.

Picke Bicke is another older character that you don’t see around much anymore. He’s a cute little mouse that should have a tail with a red ribbon on it, but it was too microscopic of an effort for me to undertake. His ears are made out of Okinawan sweet potato, his body is made out of sliced ham, and the white parts on him are boiled egg. His eyes and nose are toasted sesame seeds, which I trimmed to give them less of a pointy shape.

Chococat was nice and simple and I took us to McDonald’s and made Mr. Pikko run out and grab a straw for me to cut out his eyes easily. I should have had my own straws at home, but since my children like to drink with at least 5 straws at a time, we run out pretty quick. His eyes and mouth are made out of boiled egg and nori. I used a hole puncher to make his nori pupils. His collar is boiled egg dyed yellow and his nose is a little bit of hotdog. He’s quite happy to be sleeping on a bed of edamame!

For some reason, Keroppi was very difficult to photograph. I had to try 4 different angles and finally got one that didn’t have too much shadow. Same as the last time I made him, his face is made out of d’anjou pear skin. This time though, his eyes are made with boiled egg instead of cheese and his shirt (tomato skin) is not striped this time. I forgot to give him cheeks too!! 😦

I have saved the Badtz for last. He’s such a great character and if Pochacco is my cutie pie favorite, Bad Badtz is my favorite Sanrio character with attitude. He’s of course, being a rascal and sticking tongue at you, no doubt thinking several kinds of @*#& thoughts. I cut him out of nori and then put egg white eyes and tummy on top. His beak is the same as Chococat’s collar, egg white dyed yellow. His tongue is made out of tomato skin and nori. He was by far my favorite to make!!

In the middle of all of them I have the Queen of them all, Hello Kitty. Her ribbon is made out of red-dyed pear. The onigiri is to eat with the donburi. I lined the whole box with lettuce to make it look a little more frilly. I still wish I’d thought early on to dye the pear stars yellow. That would have looked great! I had tried to make colored egg omelettes to wrap my food into so that I could have brightly colored sections of egg wrapped food. The egg stuff just wasn’t meant to be for some reason.

For one, I was cracking the five eggs needed for the donburi and on the fifth egg, I crack it open and blood comes pouring out. I was SO disgusted and didn’t feel like scooping it out. What a total waste of 5 eggs. And then, I’m preparing the omelette mix when I add in the red coloring to make it pink. What do I get? ORANGE EGG MIX! Grrrr!! I tried cooking it, but it just didn’t look good. I ended up using it to wrap some string beans in. You can see a few down by Badtzmaru. I’d also wanted to use a pink bento box, but I didn’t have any that were big enough for what I needed.

I had more to talk about, but right now my eyes are closing involuntarily. I hope you guys like it. Tomorrow I probably won’t eat anyone except Hello Kitty. I’ll line them up in the bento cover and they can watch me eat lunch.

Onigiri (193)

Today’s bento is not for me. Baby Girl has a party today and parents were given the option of bringing food for the kids. I decided to bring in onigiri or what people in Hawaii call musubi (moo-soo-bee). I got up at 4:30 am to do this because I’m such a die-hard crazy mom.

Just kidding. I got woken up by a horrible stomach ache and by the time my ordeal was over, I decided to just stay awake already. I cooked two pots of rice to make pink rice and blue rice, adding two drops of red and blue food coloring to the water before I pressed the Cook button. I made two cups of rice each time and it turned out to be too much so I wrapped the extras in Glad wrap and froze them. FOR ONCE I did not waste rice! I am sadly a notorious rice waster when it comes to the rice pot.

Before I highlighted my hair I had one white hair. After punching out 16 nori faces this morning I’m sure I must have at least 50. Getting a good sheet of nori that will punch right is SOOO rare. Punching these faces made me want to punch something else. Like maybe me for deciding to put faces on these accursed riceballs. Hopefully the kids like them and eat them. Buddy liked looking at them, giving them a nice long “Whoaaaaa…” He’s such a great confidence booster for me!

I won’t have a bento on Monday because we’re having our monthly work potluck. Have a great weekend all!!

I’ve watched every single episode of Lost ever since Season 1 and even though fans like me went through some frustrating moments in Season 3, I’ve never really ever “lost” interest in the show. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate just how magnificently awesome Season 4 has been so far. Every episode we’ve seen this year has the old magic of Lost back from the first two seasons. Actually, I take that back, it’s much better. Last night’s episode certainly was no exception, ranking up in my top 3 episodes of the entire series. Or maybe I just ❤ Desmond. Can you be any sexier, brother?

Yeah, yeah, I’m a sucker for the Scottish accent I guess.

YAHR GONNA DYEH CHAR-LEH!

Anyway, SPOILERS!!!!!!!

Oh god, tears. Yeah, I so cried last night watching that. *sniff*

On to the bento!

Since today is leap year day, I thought I should do a froggy. What cuter frog is there than Kerokerokeroppi?! Plus since my old buddy Jeth commented yesterday that I haven’t done a face bento in a while, this fits right in! ^_^

The bento itself is pretty bad, consisting of furikake rice and shoyu chicken hot dog (with edamame on the bottom half). Keroppi’s green skin is made out of danjour pear skin. His eyes and shirt are the white fleshy part of the pear. The black outlines are obviously nori. The red stripes on his shirt are the inside flesh of a strawberry, and his cheeks are little clusters of raspberry seeds. The way I made him was to print and cut out a picture of Keroppi, then cut the entire background of him out of nori. Then I cut him into little sections so that I could get all the inner black outlines too. I cut it into eyeballs, face, two hands, two feet, and body.

After I cut out the nori I cut the black part off the papers and then used that to trace cut the fruit. I kinda messed up on the eyes because I tried to trim them down, forgetting that the eyeballs fit right into the face, so I had to do some more trimming on his face to make it look okay.

Sadly, I had forgotten my purse at work yesterday and my camera was in there. 😦 This picture was taken with Mr. Pikko’s new Samsung FlipShot camera. Quality came out pretty good, but I had to do a lot of lighting and color adjustments in Photoshop before it looked like this. Best I could do!

Tomorrow is UFC 82 and I’m not sure where we’re going to see it yet, but I’m excited about it! Anderson Silva is a very entertaining fighter and I usually root for him whenever he’s not kneeing Rich Franklin’s nose into last year. ; ;

Well the in-laws have been dropped off and I made it down to Monarch with a ragingly mad stomach. I miraculously found parking right out front and ordered my favorite: Nori Wrapped Crab Stuffed Ahi. They normally drizzle it with a wasabi sauce but since I hate wasabi, I ordered without. Got my order in just a couple mins as I guess they have them already fried and just slice them up for the lunch rush. I was in such a hurry to get home to eat it I decided to go back out later for my errands. Anyway, pic:

I looked at it several times while at stop lights because I was so hungry and then when I got home I was struck by a maddening thought. I had no bento today. I bought my lunch. So what did I do?

I busted out a bento box and put the food in there to eat.

OMG! I know! Totally mental… I think I’ve just gotten so used to eating my lunch in a nice box that I just have a hard time eating from a styrofoam box. Anyway, here it is all snuggled into my sakura lacquer box:

I’m not counting this as one of my bentos and I’m certainly not counting the points as I’m writing this off as a monthly lunch splurge, though in truth the only points would come from the panko, the mayo in the crab stuffing, and the oil it was fried in. I didn’t eat it all. I ate barely 1/4 the rice and there’s still one piece left in the box. Still, it was a lot of food. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go flop down and die on the couch from overeating or go walk it off. Cross your fingers I end up doing the latter.

Yet another reason why I am mental, I dragged the family to Don Quijote (formerly Daiei, formerly Holiday Mart) to look for good items to use in my bento #100, which I thought was going to be today’s one. Well lucky thing I came home and triple counted my bentos cause this is actually bento #96! Oh well… the things I bought should hold up fine until then. But from today I will do a countdown. Three actually.

Bento Countdown to 100: 4!
Days until UH Football: 9!
Days until UFC 74: 2!

Granted our opening game is like the joke of all college football but hey, I’m still excited to see Colt throwing again and to see how the team is shaping up this year. A game against a seriously outmatched underdog makes me worry a lot less than opening against Alabama like last year. So, this is at the very least good for my nerves. I’m still nervous since losing to this team would ruin everything, but it’s just a little teeny nervousness. What I am nervous about is our season tickets. Where the hell are they??

And yes, we’re having another UFC party this weekend, so I’ll have to watch what I eat tomorrow because I know I’ll probably end up overeating Saturday night.

On to the bento! Today I have made an entry for bentochallenge! The theme this week is favorite song and although I don’t have any one single favorite song, this one that I did is definitely high up there. The sandwich the zebra rests on is a turkey and avocado sandwich on Roman Meal Honey Oat bread, so that will count as 3 points. (since I cut off the crusts) The zebra is made out of Swiss cheese and nori cutouts. I’m quite proud of him as I did all the cutting freehand. No printouts this time! His eyes and nostrils are made out of black sesame seeds.

He’s wearing a red bell pepper sweater. I wasn’t sure this would be clear so that’s why I added in the yellow zig zag. At the top are the letters HELLO carved out of bell peppers as well. This word is part of the hint to the song, so pay attention to that too! On the right side I put a KCCA salad for Mr. Zebra to eat. A close up view:

And now for the answer:

Take a guess!

Mr. Zebra by Tori Amos

Lyrics:

Hello Mr. Zebra
Can I have you sweater
Cause it’s cold cold cold
In my hole hole hole
Ratatouille Strychnine
Sometimes she’s a friend of mine
With a gigantic whirlpool
That will blow your mind

Hello Mr. Zebra
Ran into some confusion with a Mrs. Crocodile
Furry mussels marching on
She thinks she’s Kaiser Wilhelm
Or a civiliaes syllabub
To blow your mind
Figure it out
She’s a goodtime fella
She got a little fund to fight for Moneypenny’s rights
Figure it out
She’s a goodtime fella
Too bad the burial was premature she said
And smiled

So you see, he’s Mr. Zebra and he’s wearing a sweater which Ms. Amos wants. 😀

If you’ve never heard the song of course you’ll think I’m nutters for liking it and that Tori Amos is clearly singing more than two bricks short of a full load, but if you listen to it, it’s a really cute and chipper song. It’s very short and is old school Tori back when she still sang with only her piano.

One last thing, a friend from Allakhazam is a finalist on Hunt for the Hunter so that she can be a guest star on the Sci-Fi show Ghost Hunters. Please vote for her! She is the first video displayed, Brittany Beaulac!

Last night me and the kids went out to eat at Big City Diner with my mom and brother and he very nicely treated us! This being my 3rd time eating out after switching to Core, I can understand why I was so overweight before. Portions are huge, everything has butter, and most things are fried. After closely examining everything I settled upon the salmon (as usual) and following WW advice, asked if they were willing to grill it for me. Thankfully, they were happy to do so and the miso sauce it came with was a nice compliment. I’d upgraded to their garlic mashed potatoes, which turned out to be insanely yummy, but very buttery. I made myself count this meal as 5 points.

Digging my old bunch of asparagus out of the fridge, I was sad to find mold on the bottom of the stems. But ever the food optimist, unlike my husband who will issue death sentences to apples with the slightest spot, I simply picked out all the ones that were still crisp at the top and snapped off the moldy end. Should I die in the very near future, please attempt to contact my next of kin and point out that it’s likely I stupidly ate myself to death with some old asparagus. The spinach is arranged a certain way to cover up the parts of the fish I’d already eaten and I added the lemon, tomato, and parsley for decoration and color.

I’d mentioned before about some bento cloths I found at Marukai for wrapping my box. Well I finally got to use it! Here is the box all packed up in a bunny rabbit cloth with my matching color bunny rabbit chopsticks.

We’re going out to dinner AGAIN tomorrow for a special occasion. It’s likely I’ll end up eating… yep, salmon. *sigh* I re-packed (from MIL’s containers) Buddy’s dinner to make it prettier. I have a Pokemon cloth I can take it in for him. 🙂 Here is the top layer:

It has half brown/half white rice, stewed baby carrots, and chopped cucumber kim chee. I used one of my “Whale of a Punch” scrapbooking punches for the stars.

The bottom layer contains the stew. I’m so demented with bento obsession that I actually took the piece of carrot out, washed it, sliced it, and made them into sakura carrot flowers. The extras I shoved underneath the stew for him to eat. The parsley was really cheap at the market and is a really handy decoration for bento. I’m an instant parsley fan!

Tomorrow will be a really bad day in points… damn restaurants!
