Today at work we’re having a “brown bag meeting” where we meet over lunch we bring. We ate chili last night and that doesn’t make for a very pretty lunch so I started from scratch this morning and made a pretty decent Core bento.

On the left side I have some small shrimps that I bought at Foodland on Saturday. Inside the little orange dog is some cocktail sauce to go with it. On the right side starting from the top left going clockwise there is: Carrot sticks wrapped in turkey, kim chee crab, avocado, two slices of boiled egg, a mini Babybell cheese, grape tomatoes, and cucumber kim chee.

In total it comes out to 2 points for the cheese. Lately my weakness has been in desserts. We had two birthdays last week which meant I kept eating cake day after day (leftovers) and plus I tend to excuse eating candy too. I’ve decided that I have to limit myself to 2 desserts per week and I eat a small chocolate Riesen candy to appease my sweet tooth on days I’m not eating any dessert at all. This morning I was 127.8 lbs so hopefully I can keep up with my Core bentos and stick to small dinner portions. That’s another bad habit I’ve been feeling myself falling back into: larger portions simply for the taste. I can feel my stomach being full and yet I still eat, which is totally against what Core is about!

We’re now 11 days away from the start of the UH Football season and still no season tickets in the mail! WTF? We’ll go to the post office tomorrow probably (since I have a bunch of orders to send out) and see if they’re waiting. They freakin’ better be! Regardless, I’m really excited. Baby Girl has all her football cheers down too, maybe I’ll try to take video of her doing them. So far she’s got “DEE FENS!” “GO BOWS!” and “TOUCHDOWN!” all ready. I’m so proud. *sniff*

Ever since I moved to Oahu in 1997, I’ve longed for that old feeling of excitement and fun from a bon dance song that us Hilo hicks only ever refer to as “becho”. I’d been to a couple during summers when I’d go home and last year I went to one in Wahiawa, one in Manoa Valley, and another at Pearl City Hongwanji. The Wahiawa one was a wash, no becho to be found. Same with the Manoa one, which turned out to be more of a little Japanese carnival in which they got you to pay incredibly ridiculous amounts of money on scrips for food or neon fans or towels. I called up my dad and asked him to call up his friend Reverend Bruce and see if these silly Oahu folk simply don’t do becho, but apparently they do. It’s just they either play it after I leave or simply don’t, I dunno. We finally went through the hassle of parking in a really dark and muddy area under the freeway to go to the Pearl City Hongwanji dance and they played a version of becho and I was somewhat happy.

Final Fantasy began their Sunbreeze Festival today and it means Tarutarus dancing around in their yukatas with music playing at night. This led me to YouTube where I found the following:

THAT my friends, is the becho I know from a decade ago. And now I finally know the name of the song, Fukushima ondo! Oh I feel so good today! 😀 If you’ve never been to one, I urge you to go. You don’t have to be Japanese. You don’t have to know how to dance. You can just go to watch, to eat the good food, to hang out, to watch people honor the dead. It’s a great experience!

Ok so on to the bento. I totally pigged out at our Korean food luncheon so I weighed almost 129 today. Gah! I took home vegetables and packed them into today’s lunch. The bean sprouts namul was really really good, but it’s probably really bad for a WW dieter cause it’s like, laced with sesame oil. Hee. Extreme close-up!

We had mochiko chicken last night, so that is what is in the middle. I’ve included furikake rice, corn, and some kim chee. My veggies below are the sprouts I mentioned and some cabbage:

I may end up listening to this song all day… it brings back so many great memories. Also reminds me that times change. Last year my aunty told me Hilo Hongwanji held their bon dance indoors. What the… Half the fun is when you get rained on dancing becho. Oi yoi yoi!

This morning I had the latest newsletter from J-list in my Inbox and I was so devastated to read that they’ve got a booth at AX! *sob* To think I could have been bento shopping while covering an FFXI event at the same time! *cry cry*

Ok I got all my emo out, on to the bento for today!

We ate takeout from Kim Chee 7 last night and I took a piece of Mr. Pikko’s extremely oily but oh-so-good meat jun for my lunch. Kim Chee serves good everything. Their chicken is juicy and tasty, the meat jun is soft and well marinated, they have KILLER sauces, the shrimp tempura is HUGE and onolicious, and their soup and veggies are really good. My only “complaint” is that their cabbage and bean sprouts namul are nowhere near as good as Gina’s. I’ve eaten at Kim Chee 2 in Kaimuki and 7 at Westridge. I have no clue where Kim Chees 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are! Haha!

This is my other new box, a 2-tier piggie bento box! (pic below) It’s got a food divider, which I love. None of my other boxes have had them and I’m so giddy about it! This layer has my veggies tucked snugly into one side and that includes: cabbage, bean sprouts, daikon kim chee, seaweed, and kim chee. On the other side is more half brown half white rice with sliced BBQ chicken and the piece of meat jun. There is meat jun sauce in the little thermos.

The lower layer contains my fruits which are cherries, kiwi, and some peeled lychee. If you’ve never had lychee before ohhh, it’s good stuff. The only problem is the peeling! Augh I hate it!! My dad will just bite into the shell and eat it like that but I find that so gross cause the shell is so bitter, yech!! But even though I like lychee a lot, I’ll take rambutan over lychee any day! This paragraph needs moar !!

Here is the box all closed up and ready to go. Aren’t the lil piggies so cute? I still can’t believe I won this for one $5, what a steal!

I’ve kinda ditched my 5 points per day diet for the last few days and switched to a higher point “maintenance” allowance. I figure one week of flatlining isn’t going to make me balloon up. My class reunion is this Sunday, thank goodness I’ve slimmed down so much. It would have so sucked to be fat at the luncheon. D:
